There can be no question that, at times, God spoke to certain people and the things he said to those people were recorded and handed down in our Bibles. When God speaks to his children through a person, we call that person a prophet and we call God’s thoughts, spoken through them, prophecies. Jesus made it very clear that there were numerous passages in the Old Testament that were prophecies about him so we can be confident that some of the Old Testament writings were inspired by God. We believe that Jesus was, and is, God and therefore we believe that his teachings are the teachings of God. In the New Testament we read the teachings of Jesus and we believe that his words were not just inspired by God; they were the words of God.
So, we can be sure that some of the words written in our Bibles are translations of the thoughts of God originally spoken by prophets, or by God himself. They are translations because nobody who appears in our Bible, or who wrote any of the books of our Bible, spoke English. Unfortunately, translations can never be an exact representation of what was said in the original language. This is why we need to pray that God will speak to us when we read our Bibles, and why we need to listen to those who have studied the original languages.
