I love our Bible.

I love the stories I read in our Bible about ordinary people experiencing God.  I’m encouraged when I read about people serving God faithfully and humbly.  I’m also encouraged by the many accounts of people making mistakes and getting things wrong.  I’m comforted by the knowledge that, just like me, every human being who ever served God made mistakes and got things wrong, including those specially chosen by God such as his prophets and Jesus’ disciples.

I love the way God speaks to me through our Bible.  It’s not the only way he speaks to me, but God most definitely does speak to me through the words of my human brothers (and probably sisters) who wrote the writings that make up our Bible.  This is how I read the Bible – praying that God will speak to me, expecting him to do so, and listening prayerfully for his voice as I read.

And the most important reason for me to love our Bible is that it contains the accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus.  The four accounts of his life vary in details and sometimes contradict each other, but this does not bother me at all.  It is not surprising that there are differences between the four accounts.  Indeed, it would be surprising if there were no differences.  The four accounts of the resurrection, for example, vary in many details but this is exactly what you would expect to find in the recollections of a variety of people who witnessed such an extraordinary event.  (The good news, of course, is that all four accounts are fully agreed on the one most important point.  The tomb was empty – Jesus is alive.)

May our loving heavenly Father bless us as we walk with him.
